A very important item in a country like ours, where strong rain showers occur in the summer months. A common tent, more economical type sold in supermarkets, has a waterproofing of 400 to 600 mm of water column (see a more technical explanation on this below). Our tents have a minimum of 2000 mm waterproofing, and at various points you can reach 3000 mm. That makes them resistant to storms of greater duration, or thin and continuous rains for several days. An important point is to not confuse condensation of the body itself, that forms on the inner walls of the sobreteto, with water infiltration. Our body overnight releases the equivalent of about a cup of water by the body or breath. If the tent is not well ventilated that moisture released by the body in the sobreteto and condenses inside may leak. This occurs in particular in colder days, when the temperature difference between the outside and the inside of the tent gets bigger.
What is d ´ water column? Adopted standard to measure the impermeability of the fabric is by the weight of water that supports tissue before you start to let the water pass through it. The traditional system is to use a standard diameter tube where it attaches to the tissue to be tested on one end. Then this pipe is placed vertically and if dumps water until the moment they appear 3 drops through the fabric. At that time if stops the test and the measurement of the height of water in the tube (water column) represents the degree of impermeability of the fabric. When the tent loses its waterproofing? When it is exposed to more than 200 hours in the Sun begins the chemical degradation of waterproofing treatment and their own strands of fabric loses resistance. A practical way to see this is by comparison between the internal and external color of the fabric. If you notice some fading can be concluded that the resistance to water and the very fabric have been affected by the Sun’s UV rays. If the fabric has not lost your resistance you can reimpermeabilizar the sobretetos in specialist shops or with the use of sprays.
Another important point in a tent for use in tropical climates is the great intensity of UV rays near the line of Ecuador and the fact that the days are long and sunny in summer. As stated above, the ultraviolet rays affect hard sobreteto of tents, which are to be considered as temporary shelters, never left mounted for long time without (if this is unavoidable, keep it covered with a black plastic or canvas during the time when not using it). To extend the life of our tents, we apply a chemical in your sobretetos which prolongs the shelf life in several additional hours. How to increase UV protection? By implementing a solution based on titanium dioxide you can prevent most of the Ultraviolet rays affect the fabric of the sobretetos. In the case of our tents the 50 + index means that only every 1:00 pm 50 UV units will pass through the fabric.
When you sew the sobreteto needles used leave micro-holes where water can infiltrate. To prevent this we opted for the application of a transparent tape applied by the inner side of the sobreteto in all of our Tents. This application is made by applying heat and pressure generated by high frequency waves, which results in better grip at available today for this type of procedure. Another process possible, but less durability, is the application of a sealing solution from the outside. We have this product in our line (REF. 9695 of Coghlan ´ ‘s) for reselagem of parties affected by the use, or for use in other brands of Tents, without this treatment.
The frames of our tents (hollow fiber) have an outer covering in PVC to prevent, in the case of accidental breakage, the splinters may injure the user or damage to the fabric. In addition, to reinforce the rods of the frame, mechanically some models have the ends with metal reinforcements, which increase resistance to cracks in case of heavy use, under strong winds or accidental efforts. Our models with frame in duroaluminio exempt these reinforcements.
